Choosing a Password
Your password should ideally be more than 7 characters long as longer passwords are more secure. It is highly recommended that you choose an unique password for each site that you go to. Some people choose a phrase like "WhereTheMindIsWithoutFear" (a famous Tagore poem) so that they can easily remember their password. In the Welcome email, only the first and last two characters are shown for security reasons.

Verbs - Words of Action - and Verb Conjugation

Verb -a word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence   (to) work, (to) learn, (to) eat

Verbs are a necessary part of any sentence. Your Vocabulary of Verbs will let you describe any action with more precision.

Verbs are "conjugated" (modified) based on Person (first, second or third) and Tense (past, present and future) in which they are used.

Take the Verb "to eat" and how you will decribe this action in English.
In the First Person, you could say "I have eaten", "I am eating" and "I will eat" to show Past Tense, Present Tense and Future Tense respectively.
In the Second Person these will become "You have eaten", "You are eating" and "You will eat".
In the Third Person these will become "He has eaten", "He is eating" and "He will eat".

Bangla is similar in that there are changes to the root verb based on Person and Tense. The Bangla word for eat is খাওয়া(khaOya). The equivalent Bangla sentences are shown below.

First Person
Past Tense I had eaten আমি খেয়েছিলাম
(ami kheyechhilam)
Present Tense I am eating আমি খাচ্ছিলাম
(ami khachchhilam)
Future Tense I will eat আমি খাব
(ami khabo)
Second Person
Past Tense You have eaten তুমি খেয়েছিলে
(tumi kheyechhile)
Present Tense You are eating তুমি খেয়েছ
(tumi khachchho)
Future Tense You will eat তুমি খাবে
(tumi khabe)
Third Person
Past Tense He has eaten ও খেয়েছিল
(O kheyechhilo)
Present Tense He is eating ও খেয়েছে
(O kheyechhe)
Future Tense He will eat ও খাবে
(O khabe)

In Bangla, the Tenses have multiple forms.

  • Past Tense has 4 forms (Simple, Continuous, Perfect and Habitual)
  • Present Tense has 3 forms (Simple, Continuous, Perfect)
  • Future Tense has one form.
Each Bangla Verb will therefore have 24 "conjugations" - First, Second, Third Persons, each with 8 Tense forms. This may seem overwhelming as you would need to memorize 2400 conjugated verb forms if you try to learn 100 Bangla verbs.

The conjugated versions are formed by taking the root form of the verb and adding a suffix. The rules for creating the conjugated verbs are quite consistent. On this site, I have developed software that will create the 24 conhugations for any verb you select.

Rules for Conjugating Verbs

Verb Conjugation Rules

As an example, let us look at a few conjugations for the verb দেখা (dekha) which is the English verb to see.
  1. Start with the Root Verb [eg. to see দেখা = দ + ে + খ + া (d e kh a) ].
  2. Truncate the Vowel sound at the end [ দ + ে + খ = দেখ (d e kh a) ]
  3. Select the suffix, based on the Person and context of the Tense in the sentence.
    TenseSuffixConjugated Verb
    In the First Person
    Past Continuous Tense "-ছিলাম" "-chhilam" দেখ + ছিলাম = দেখছিলাম (dekhochhilam)
    Present Continuous Tense "-ছি" "-chhi" দেখ + ছি = দেখছি (dekhochhi)
    Future Tense "-ব" "-bo" দেখ + ব = দেখব (dekhobo)
    In the Second Person
    Past Continuous Tense "-ছিলে" "-chhile" দেখ + ছিলে = দেখছিলে (dekhochhile)
    Present Continuous Tense "-ছ" "-chho" দেখ + ছ = দেখছ (dekhochho)
    Future Tense "-বে" ("-be") sound দেখ + বে = দেখবে dekhobe
    In the Third Person
    Past Continuous Tense "-ছিল" ("-chhilo") sound দেখ + ছিল = দেখছিল (dekhochhilo)
    Present Continuous Tense "-ছে" ("-chhe") sound দেখ + ছে = দেখছে (dekhochhe)
    Future Tense "-বে" ("-be") sound দেখ + বে = দেখবে (dekhobe)
The complete list of suffixes can be seen by using the Conjugation Wizard software. In the following section, the Conjugation of Verbs can ve displayed.

    An Exception to Conjugation Rules

The Verb go যাওয়া JaOya is an exeption to the rules developed so far. You will find that for First Person, the Past Tense conjugations are
    • Simple - গেলাম gelam
    • Continuous - যাচ্ছিলাম Jachchhilam
    • Perfect - গিয়েছিলাম giyechhilam
    • Habitual - যেতাম Jetam
You will notice that the root verb was changed from the expected যা Ja to গি gi. This exception is noted and adjusted for in the software.

The following lists show these rules applied to sets of verbs, roughly organized by their usage.
